Na Extrusion by the Sartorius of Rana pipiens
نویسنده
چکیده
Sartorius muscles of R. pipiens may be enriched in sodium and depleted of potassium by prolonged soaking in the cold in K-free or low K Ringer's solution. Such K-depleted muscles take up potassium and extrude sodium when exposed to Ringer's solution containing 10 mM K at ordinary room temperature (ca. 20 degrees C), with no dependence on external Na ion concentration in either phase within fairly wide limits. Extrusion of excess fiber Na is demonstrated on single muscles using Na(24)-loaded tissues. Rate of exchange of excess fiber Na does not differ significantly from the rate of exchange of Na normally present in muscle fibers.

متن کاملEnergy liberation and chemical change in frog skeletal muscle during single isometric tetanic contractions
Recent data obtained from Rana temporaria sartorius muscles during an isometric tetanus indicate that the time-course of phosphocreatine (PC) splitting cannot account for the total energy (heat + work) liberation (Gilbert et al. 1971. J. Physiol. (Lond.) 218:)63). As this conclusion is important to an understanding of the chemical energetics of contraction, similar experments were performed on ...
متن کاملTwo modes of gating during late Na+ channel currents in frog sartorius muscle
Na+ currents were measured during 0.4-s depolarizing pulses using the cell-attached variation of the patch-clamp technique. Patches on Cs-dialyzed segments of sartorius muscle of Rana pipiens contained an estimated 25-500 Na+ channels. Three distinct types of current were observed after the pulse onset: a large initial surge of inward current that decayed within 10 ms (early currents), a steady...
متن کاملFirst-order kinetics of muscle oxygen consumption, and an equivalent proportionality between QO2 and phosphorylcreatine level. Implications for the control of respiration
In frog sartorius muscle, after a tetanus at 20 degrees C, during which an impulse-like increase occurs in the rate of ATP hydrolysis, the rate of O2 consumption (QO2) reaches a peak relatively quickly and then declines monoexponentially, with a time constant not dependent on the tetanus duration (tau = 2.6 min in Rana pipiens and 2.1 min in Rana temporaria). To a good approximation, these kine...
